Good news - the beat goes on

Today's exciting adventure brought to us by our friendly cardiologist. 

To review, before D started chemo, way back when, she was given an echo cardiogram.   The results of that test were uncertain as an unusual "spot" was detected on the wall that connects the two lower heart chambers.  At the time, the decision was made to do a second echo cardiogram three months down the road. 

A second echo cardiogram was given several weeks ago, with the same results as the first.  The cardiologist explained that because the test is done looking in from the outside, the view of the heart is not detailed enough to determine what the "spot" is.  In most cases, the "spot" is benign, but it is important to know for certain what the "spot" is.  An alternative test, more invasive and expensive, was indicated.  Today's adventure was that test.  Called a transesophageal echocardiogram,  the procedure involves a light general anesthesia and then the insertion of a small ultrasound transmitter/receiver probe down the throat.  The resultant images give a more detailed look at heart tissue in real-time.  The outcome of the procedure was that the spot is benign and most likely has been around since birth.

Needless to say, the anticipation was much worse than the procedure, so we're happy for the good news and that the day is done.   Since D was up at 4AM today,  bedtime will come early tonight.
