virus cough update

hello to all, as most of you know, diane has been suffering from a cronic virus [possibly baterial] infection for about the last 5 weeks. until about three weeks ago the infection/congestion was annoying but not terribly debilitating. starting just after xmas, the cough/congestion got worse. we were still in northern california, so several calls were made to diane's regular and onc drs. for advice. because the phlegm was clear, both drs. advised the a infection was viral and that treating the symptoms was all that could be done. this we did with over-the-counter stuff like tusin, dayquil, nyquil, etc. when we returned to leucadia two weeks ago, we immediately went in to see diane's regular dr. who did a series of test, confirmed that the lungs were clear [no pneumonia], said she felt the the infection was viral [meaning no meds to attack the virus] and prescribed a codeine cough syrup to help with the cough. the cough got worse over the following week and on monday of this week we went for our regular visit [including a blood analysis] with the onc. the onc thought she heard something rattling around in diane's left lung and ordered an xray which came back clear [which is to say, nothing new that hadn't been there in previous xrays before the cough started]. that was good news, but didn't help figure out what to do about the cough. the onc was concerned about the long term of this condition even though the blood analysis and xray looked normal suggesting no bacterial infection. so she did a "hail mary" and put diane on an antibiotic. yesterday, it seemed there was improvement in the morning, but by late afternoon it seemed diane was back to square one, lots of coughing. she dosed up on the codeine syrup and some other stuff and finally fell asleep around 9pm. through out the night and this morning up to the time of this writing, the cough is gone, the general fatigue is still present. so today, she will remain immobile in bed [no talking], take dayquil and codeine syrup and norco [and whatever else we have] to try to keep the cough at bay. stay tuned.. tom
